David received a BA degree in Music from Duke University, attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina and Cornell University in Music Composition, and served two years in the Peace Corps in Colombia where he organized and directed a municipal band. His work “Reflections on a Park Bench” for twelve tubas was performed in Carnegie Hall in 1974.

David took up watercolor painting in 1995 when his wife signed him up for an introductory course in a life-long learning course. In addition to his 25-plus years of painting as an accomplished watercolorist,  David has led a parallel teaching career.  He presently has a roster of over 60 students in his weekly art class which alternates between live sessions and zoom classes. He teaches nationally including workshops in Sedona, AZ, the Sagamore Camp in the Adirondacks,  Acadia National Park in Maine, the Georgia Lowlands, and the Middle Tennessee Highland Rim. He has taught internationally in Ireland, Italy and Spain.  Workshops in the planning stage include New Orleans in the spring of 2023 and Costa Rica in the fall of 2023.
